LNG a solution for the future
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) provides a lot of supply flexibility, mainly because it does not depend on the traditional gas supply routes. For Distrigas, it is the third most important long-term supply source. This diversification in our purchase portfolio constitutes a further guarantee for reliable deliveries. As LNG is extremely flexible in use, we are able to exploit the supply possibilities on the European market to the full. A major asset guaranteeing advantageous rates for the user.
Supply diversification
Distrigas has been active in the LNG market for more than 20 years. We have been importing LNG from Algeria between 1982 and 2007, and from Qatar since then. Distrigas owns one LNG carrier, the "Methania".
On 29 March 2007, Distrigas began importing 2.75 billion m³ of natural gas a year from Qatar. This contract with RasGas guarantees the delivery of natural gas to Zeebrugge for the next twenty years. Furthermore, Distrigas's strategic location enables to make the most of this privileged position in the heart of the Atlantic basin and the European gas transportation network.
Apart from long-term solutions, Distrigas also diversifies its portfolio with short-term contracts. This is why we purchase LNG on a 'spot' basis from a variety of sources: Abu Dhabi, Algeria, Egypt, Indonesia, Nigeria, Qatar and Trinidad and Tobago.
